Unlike your more dogmatic religions such as Christianity - whereas one merely needs to 'accept the Lord as their Savior' and abide by the laws of a bible in order to call themselves a 'Christian', there is quite a bit more involved in the path to becoming a Wiccan.
(Note: I do not personally 'knock' the religion of Christianity - or Christians themselves. There is indisputable documented proof that Jesus did in fact exist. And, I whole-heartedly believe that He was indeed a Saint of sorts, with the purpose of spiritually enlightening the peoples of his time and pushing them toward their better good. My main criticism of Christianity would have to be; that I am convinced the teachings of the 'Holy Bible', both past and present, have been warped way out of its intended contents, and that much of Jesus's teachings have been equally taught with much misinterpretation - at best. The leaders of Christianity, throughout time, have corrupted, to their personal gain and satisfaction, Christianity as a whole - to the point of where the hypocrisies have infected the un-expecting Christian followers like a plague. Enough said.)
Wicca (as well as Witchcraft) is based on the possibility of interaction between humans and the Deities of the Spirit World. It must be always kept in mind that these Beings are much more evolved than mankind. They are Sacred Beings. They do not share our human flaws, indiscretion, or impurities. Approaching spiritual Beings, therefore, must be done in accordance to the 'Rules of Realms' whereas the 'Hosts' reside. If a student desires to step upon Sacred Ground - they best first make certain that their feet (so to speak) as well as their 'whole' - are spotless. To approach the Hosts of Spiritual Realms is otherwise impossible.
This requires some personal work, and is a step-by-step process. The accomplishment of this 'work' is obtained by a necessary three-fold balancing between Body, Mind, and Spirit.
That is to say, a student can not evolve spiritually if their mind is cluttered with problematic thoughts. In turn, nor can the mind evolve the spirit if earthly matters and surroundings are not in order.
The Spiritual Deities clearly understand (even if we do not) that we are in our earthly forms for a purpose... To take care of 'earthly' business. They simply will not open a door to you if you neglect your physical responsibilities. These responsibilities include...
a) Taking good care yourself (eating right, kicking bad habits, exercising, and all that garb)
b) Taking care of your personal environment (relationships, survival needs, and - yes, cleaning your house)
These basic requirements of keeping your 'physical' life in order may seem ridiculously simplistic. But, show me someone who sits around in a filthy house - and I'll show you someone who suffers from mental deficiencies and is 'spiritually void'. These are not the ingredients of a student which the Deities care to entertain.
Therefore, getting your earthly affairs in order is a must - and is the first step one must take toward gaining spiritual evolvement.
